# Cybersecurity RSS monitoring: from sources to remediation

> Build RSS-based security monitoring for a team or MSP: source selection, asset inventory, deduplication, qualification and evidence of remediation.

An RSS feed distributes publications. It does not know which products you use, which versions are exposed or who should approve remediation. Useful security monitoring connects sources to an inventory and then to a documented decision.

This proposed process suits an IT team, consultancy or MSP. It uses public feeds and explicit internal decisions. The worked example is fictional and does not report a customer incident.

## Give each source a purpose

Start with advisories from vendors in your inventory. Add institutional alerts and a limited set of technical publications for understanding mechanisms. These sources serve different purposes:

| Source | Useful question | Limitation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Vendor advisory | Is my product and version affected? | Your local inventory must be accurate |
| Institutional alert | Which event deserves particular attention? | Relevance depends on your exposure |
| Technical analysis | How does the issue work and how can it be checked? | A demonstration does not cover every deployment |
| rootzero research | Which observations and references has the lab published? | This corpus does not cover every CVE |

[CERT-FR offers separate feeds](https://cert.cyber.gouv.fr/flux-rss/) for alerts, advisories, threats and news bulletins. Select categories with a purpose instead of importing every source without a triage process.

[rootzero subscriptions](/en/feeds/) separate articles, research notes and vulnerability advisories. An OPML file imports these subscriptions. Keep either the combined feed or the specialist feeds unless your reader handles duplicates.

## Establish a minimum inventory

Record vendor, product, known version, environment, exposure and owner for each asset. MSPs should also identify the customer and keep their tracking spaces separate.

Avoid approximate product-name matches. An embedded library may have a different name from the application that uses it; unrelated products can share a word. Keep unknown versions visible rather than treating them as unaffected.

## Turn an item into a decision

1. **Identify** the publication: retain its original URL, publisher, date and identifier when available.
2. **Deduplicate** by identifier, product and reference while preserving provenance.
3. **Match** against products and versions actually present.
4. **Qualify** exposure, preconditions and vendor guidance.
5. **Assign** an owner and decision: remediate, investigate or document non-applicability.
6. **Close** with evidence of the resulting version, configuration or action.

The [RSS specification](https://www.rssboard.org/rss-specification) defines the publication format. An item identifier helps a reader recognise an entry; it need not identify a vulnerability. Several legitimate publications may discuss the same CVE.

## Fictional example: an advisory concerns an exposed service

An advisory names a VPN portal version. The inventory confirms the product but has no current version. The first task is to establish that version, rather than declare a compromise.

After checking, compare the advisory’s conditions with the deployment. A remediation ticket should retain the asset, owner, intended action and expected evidence. Notifying a team does not mean a fix has been installed.

Closure can record the version observed after intervention and checks performed. If a constraint prevents updating, retain the decision, its measures and the next review date. The feed triggered an assessment; it did not make the decision for the team.

## Where AI agents can help

An agent may propose a product match or draft a summary. Require source links and preserve unknown fields. Instructions found in a publication must not become permissions to act. Our [cybersecurity AI agent guide](/en/research/cybersecurity-ai-agents-multi-agent/) proposes pilot checks.

Automated ticket creation may also generate noise when several sources repeat the same advisory. Measure useful decisions, qualification time and entries still lacking an owner. Collecting more items does not establish lower exposure.

## Connect monitoring with assessment

[IOC Extractor](/en/tools/ioc/) structures supplied text; extracting an IP does not establish maliciousness. The [CVSS calculator](/en/tools/cvss/) supports documenting severity, while asset priority still depends on context.

Monitoring covers known publications. A security assessment examines a specific scope and may investigate weaknesses absent from a feed. Depending on the need, consider [lab services](/en/services/) or the [AI pentesting selection framework](https://spectr-ai.eu/en/pentest-ia-ou-manuel). These activities complement each other when their objectives are clear.
